Die Quadratur des Kreises mag in der Mathematik ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit sein, in der Musik funktioniert sie durchaus. Das zumindest beweist das Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble mit der Doppel-CD „The Buchla Suite – A Handcrafted Tribute To Morton Subotnick“.

Der amerikanische Komponist Morton Subotnick arbeitete ab 1963 in San Francisco mit dem Physiker und Instrumentenbauer Donald Buchla zusammen. Mit dem nach Buchla benannten modularen Synthesizer nahm er 1967 das Album „Silver Apples To The Moon“ auf, das in seiner klanglichen und strukturellen Komplexität bis heute unerreicht ist.

Das Stefan Schultze Large Ensemble kommt in seiner Hommage auf Subotnick völlig ohne Synthesizer aus. Stefan Schultze ist Pianist und Produzent, aber in allererster Linie Komponist. Wie Subotnick ist auch er selbst ein Klangerfinder. Sämtliche Parts der Buchla Suite stammen aus seiner Feder. „Die Herausforderung liegt darin, das Ensemble wie zehn Oszillatoren aufzustellen“, so Schultze. „Wir versuchen, wie ein Synthesizer zu klingen.“

Morton Subotnicks „Silver Apples“ ist dafür gleichermaßen Inspiration und Ausgangspunkt. Für Schultze kam es darauf an, der Inspiration von Subotnick gerecht zu werden und der Identität des Ensembles trotzdem treu zu bleiben. Er selbst nennt seine Annährung einen Kommentar. Während dieses zweijährigen Entstehungsprozesses kam auch Morton Subotnick selbst ins Spiel. Es gab mehrere Treffen zwischen beiden Komponisten, bei denen für Schultze vor allem der menschliche Faktor zum Tragen kam. Dieser menschliche Transformationsprozess nennt er eins der faszinierendsten Momente in seiner Arbeit. Subotnick kommunizierte in erster Linie direkt mit seinem Gerät, aber Schultze übersetzt dies in einen Kontext mit vielen individuellen Stimmen und versteht das Large Ensemble in diesem Projekt als sozialen Synthesizer.

Bedingungslose genuine Schöpfung als menschlicher Urimpuls – nichts anderes passiert auf „The Buchla Suite – A Handcrafted Tribute To Morton Subotnick“. Aufbrechen im Bekannten, seine Vision nicht aus dem Auge verlieren, wissen, dass man ankommt, ohne jedoch vorhersagen zu können, wo das genau sein wird.

Pianist and composer STEFAN SCHULTZE and his LARGE ENSEMBLE have now paid tribute to the master in a very special way. "The Buchla Suite / A Handcrafted Tribute To Morton Subotnick" (Jazzwerkstatt) completely dispenses with electronic instruments and yet the 11-piece ensemble (including Peter Ehwald and Elena Kakaliagou) succeeds in acoustically recreating the special qualities of a Buchla system.Sometimes a delicate "melody" chirps, to which vocalist Almut Kühne recites explanations from the (Buchla) "manual". Before that, they thought about Subotnick's epochal "Silver Apples To The Moon" in a wonderfully intricate way (and called the piece "Golden Apples of the Sun"). Then there's the rapturously artistic avant-swan vocals on "Swan", which soar to the highest heights (also in the literal sense) over a wide-meshed network of singular tones. And, of course, there are also grandiose "all against all" moments, such as in "Fragments". 5
